Leah Remembers

Chapter 11 - Leah Remembers
Leah’s memories returned unevenly.
She remembered Amara’s birth, the foundation audit, and the night of the fire.
She did not remember several years in the clinics.
Ordinary moments returned first.
Julian burning pancakes.
Amara sleeping with both hands around Bunny.
A yellow dress Leah wore to the hospital opening.
Pain returned later.
Eleanor telling her Julian remarried.
A nurse showing a falsified obituary for Amara.
Victor promising freedom if she signed away the trust.
Leah had refused every time.
Julian visited under the guidance of a therapist.
He did not ask whether she still loved him.
He apologized for accepting the death report too quickly and allowing Victor to control the investigation.
“I saw a fire and believed the people who explained it,” he said.
“You were grieving.”
“I was also powerful enough to question them.”
Both facts were true.
Amara sat between them drawing a rabbit with two different ears.
“Are you married?” she asked.
Julian and Leah looked at each other.
Legally, yes. Leah’s false death had never ended the marriage.
Emotionally, the answer was not simple.

“We are your parents,” Leah said. “The rest will take time.”
Amara accepted that more easily than the adults.
