Eleanor’s Apology

Chapter 15 - Eleanor’s Apology
Eleanor requested a meeting with Amara.
The child advocate asked Amara whether she wanted one.
She said yes, but only if Leah stayed.
Eleanor entered the room without jewelry, assistants, or legal folders.
She looked smaller than the woman in Julian’s childhood photographs.
“I am sorry,” she said.
Amara held Bunny.
“For what part?”
The question forced precision.
Eleanor apologized for altering the trust, helping hide Leah, believing the hospitals mattered more than one family, and allowing Celeste near Amara.
“Did you know she was mean to me?”
“I knew she was controlling. I did not ask enough.”
“Dad says that too.”
Eleanor nodded.
“I taught him that not asking was safer.”
Amara did not offer forgiveness.
She asked whether Eleanor would go to prison.
“Possibly.”
“Are you scared?”
“Yes.”
“I was scared in my room.”
Eleanor looked down.
The meeting ended after twenty minutes.
Amara chose not to schedule another.
