The Elevator Below the Hospital

Chapter 05 - The Elevator Below the Hospital

Marcus forced the elevator doors open before the emergency lock engaged.

Smoke entered the lower corridor.

Someone had started a fire in the old records room above them.

Ortiz called firefighters and ordered Victor detained.

He had vanished.

Julian carried Amara up the service stairs while Marcus and the engineer removed the most important drives.

The hidden archive survived because Leah had installed fireproof shutters.

Outside, reporters gathered behind the ambulance lane.

Celeste arrived wearing a bandage on her lip and a coat draped around her shoulders.

She told cameras that Julian had abducted Amara and endangered her inside a condemned building.

Then Ortiz stepped in front of her.

“We have a recording of you attempting to take the child’s property and discussing forged guardianship documents.”

Celeste’s face remained calm.

“Recordings can be manipulated.”

Amara lifted the bunny.

“Bunny heard you.”

The simple sentence reached every camera.

Celeste looked at the child with open hatred before remembering the audience.

That single expression changed public opinion faster than any statement.

Victor’s vehicle was found near the river.

Inside were foundation files, two passports, and medication from Green Hollow Recovery Center.

Patient L-17 had been housed there.

The medication suppressed memory and caused confusion.

The clinic reported that L-17 had been transferred forty-eight hours earlier.

The transfer order carried Julian’s electronic signature.

He had never signed it.

Celeste had access to his office tablet.

The destination was listed only as “North Residence.”

The Cross family owned three northern properties.

One had belonged to Julian’s mother, Eleanor.

Eleanor had died the same year as Leah’s fire.

No body had been shown to Julian.
