The House Beyond the Pines

Chapter 06 - The House Beyond the Pines
North Residence sat behind iron gates and dense pine forest.
The property appeared abandoned from the road.
Inside, lights burned behind covered windows.
State police entered under warrant.
They found medical rooms, staff quarters, and a surveillance center monitoring Julian’s mansion, Amara’s school, and Crosswell Hospital.
One camera showed Leah asleep in an upstairs room.
Julian ran toward the staircase.
Ortiz stopped him.
“We clear the building first.”
The waiting felt unbearable.
Ten minutes later, officers brought Leah downstairs.
She was thinner, her dark hair streaked with silver, but alive.
She looked at Julian without recognition.
Then she saw Amara.
Her hands began to shake.
“Moon Bunny,” she whispered.
Amara crossed the room before anyone could stop her.
Leah knelt and held her daughter.
A song emerged between sobs—the same lullaby Amara remembered.
Julian remained several feet away.
Leah looked at him with fear.
“They said you chose the company.”
“Who said that?”
A woman entered from the rear corridor under police escort.
Eleanor Cross.
Julian’s mother was alive.
Eleanor claimed she had hidden Leah to protect her from Victor Lane.
Leah stared at her.
“You kept me drugged.”
“To stop them from finding you.”
“You told me my daughter died.”
Eleanor’s face broke.
She had joined Victor’s plan after the fire, believing Leah’s trust would destroy the medical network. Later, when she regretted it, Victor threatened Julian and Amara.
Eleanor moved Leah between clinics but never restored her freedom.
She called it protection.
Leah called it imprisonment.
Julian finally understood the pattern behind his family.

They renamed it care.
