The Missing Children

Chapter 09 - The Missing Children

Leah’s audit drives revealed more than financial theft.

The foundation’s fake patient identities were linked to real children whose records had been altered.

Some had been moved between foster homes without legal review.

Others were listed as receiving treatment they never received.

A few had disappeared from official systems entirely.

Ortiz formed a task force.

Nurses, teachers, social workers, and former foster youth joined the investigation.

Amara’s bunny contained a second storage chip beneath the stitched paw.

Leah had hidden copies of the patient keys there before the fire.

The toy was not only a recorder.

It was the map to hundreds of erased identities.

One file belonged to a boy named Caleb Stone, officially placed in a treatment home three years earlier.

The address was an empty warehouse.

The payments continued every month.

Caleb was found living with a retired nurse who believed she was his legal guardian.

Victor’s firm had forged the papers.

The nurse had cared for him well, but the system had stolen his history and family contact.

Every recovered file raised a difficult question.

Correcting records could disrupt children’s current lives.

The task force adopted one rule Leah insisted upon:

No child would be moved simply because adults finally found better paperwork.

Truth mattered.

So did stability.

The children would be heard before institutions corrected them again.
