The Locked Maternity Wing

Chapter 04 - The Locked Maternity Wing

Crosswell Children’s Hospital stood at the edge of the city beneath a row of old oak trees.

The new glass tower remained open. The original brick wing had been sealed behind temporary walls for six years.

Julian arrived with Detective Ortiz, Marcus, and a structural engineer.

Victor Lane was waiting.

“You cannot enter without board approval.”

Julian held up the key.

“I built this hospital with Leah.”

“You donated money. The foundation owns the property.”

“My daughter owns the foundation’s controlling trust.”

Victor’s expression tightened.

He called the key sentimental nonsense.

It opened the service door on the first attempt.

Inside, dust covered child-sized chairs and faded murals of moons and stars. The electricity had been disconnected, but emergency lights flickered when Amara’s key entered a second lock.

A hidden elevator descended beneath the maternity wing.

The lower level contained a laboratory, document archive, and rows of small recording drives.

Leah had built an independent audit system after noticing patient identities being duplicated across the network.

False children were being created on paper.

The foundation paid for their treatments, schooling, and foster placement.

The money then disappeared into companies controlled by Victor and several board members.

Julian opened a drawer marked AMARA.

Inside were her original birth certificate, trust documents, and a recent photograph.

The photograph showed Leah alive.

She stood outside a private recovery center six months earlier.

On the back, someone had written:

PATIENT L-17. MEMORY UNSTABLE. NO FAMILY CONTACT.

Julian sat down hard.

The fire had not killed his wife.

Someone had kept her hidden for six years.

Amara looked at the photograph.

“That’s Mom.”

Julian could not answer.

A warning alarm began pulsing through the archive.

Victor had remained upstairs.

He was trying to seal the elevator.
