Eleanor’s Version

Chapter 07 - Eleanor’s Version
Eleanor requested a formal interview.
She confessed that Victor Lane organized the laboratory fire to destroy Leah’s audit files. The blaze was staged after Leah was removed from the building.
Eleanor agreed because Victor convinced her that public exposure would close hospitals and cost thousands of jobs.
The death certificate gave Leah a new identity.
The memorial service kept Julian from searching.
Celeste joined the foundation two months later as Victor’s representative.
“Why let her near Amara?” Julian asked.
“I thought I could watch her.”
“You watched her build a guardianship case.”
Eleanor admitted she had underestimated Celeste.
She also admitted creating the original trust loophole allowing a family-appointed guardian to control Amara’s shares.
Leah had designed the trust for independent oversight.
Eleanor changed one clause before filing.
The entire conspiracy depended on that alteration.
Detective Ortiz asked who controlled the stolen funds.
Eleanor named Victor, Celeste, three foundation directors, and Paul Voss, administrator of Green Hollow.
She also named herself.
For years, Eleanor received investment returns from the shell companies and chose not to ask enough questions.
Regret had not returned the money.
Fear had not freed Leah.
She agreed to cooperate without requesting immunity.
Amara sat with a child advocate in another room.
No adult asked her to listen.

Julian learned that protecting a child could mean keeping details away temporarily—but only when the purpose was the child’s wellbeing, not an adult’s reputation.
The distinction had escaped his family for generations.
